The Story

This dictionary of color schemes compiles noshime patterns popular in the Edo period. Noshime was the ceremonial dress of the samurai class during the Edo period, with kasuri, striped, or lattice pattern from the chest to the waist, and plain fabric on the shoulders and hem. This book introduces in color 948 items from a sample book used by weavers and wholesalers in Nishijin, Kyoto, in the late Edo period, which show the patterns of kasuri, stripes, and latticework in the area from the chest to the waist. The chic and stylish sense of the warrior class is still used today in many fields as a reference for color schemes.
